POMA Systems

Between desire and reality are many hidden steps

Engineering cycle

Our customers come to us with clear tasks and requirements: optimization or the design of a new painting facility. With our know-how, great experience and high degree of development expertise we ultimately make it possible to predict the results of our work in painting automation.

However, our strive for perfection means that we do not rest on our laurels.

Our goals are:
  • Optimization of production technology and quality
  • Reduction of costs and maintaining of value through process technology consulting
  • Quality assurance
  • Testing and development in our technical center and laboratory

The task
  • Plant constructed years ago seldom corresponds to the current state of the art. Details are not resolved satisfactorily and the system as a whole functions less than optimally. What could be improved?
  • A customer is planning a new plant. A test facility is to be constructed. A technical centre needs equipping. What needs to be taken into account here?

1. The criteria of an as-is analysis

Ideas, alternatives, technology, costs, feasibility
efficiency
  • Identification of solvent consumption
  • Identification of paint losses
  • Identification of flushing times
System technology
  • Paint supply technology
  • Color changing technology
  • Paint dosing technology

In addition to purely technical aspects and economy, protection of the environment and health are now well-established objectives in paint automation. Factors such as product quality or quality assurance can be decisive. In addition, statutory conditions and guidelines also need to be observed. The engineers and technicians of POMA Systems employ their knowledge and extensive experience to help you follow the path of suitable solutions.

2. Consulting and process optimization

Consulting is not about guessing

Paint application plant comes under the heading of special-purpose engineering. In other words, it is generally a tailored solution and not a mass-market product. It is therefore logical that such a product requires a particular degree of consulting. As project partner we possess extensive experience and a comprehensive repertoire of solution strategies. This enables us to provide expert and manufacturer-neutral advice - and new know-how is being accumulated all the time with each challenge.

Our consulting services include
  • Project Management
  • Specification sheets
  • Extensive support in all project phases
  • Quality Management
  • Training
Planning, development, design and realization of
  • Paint automation
  • Fundamental new design
  • Optimization and expansion of existing plants
  • System integration of robotics
Manufacturing technology
  • Costom-made products and product optimization
  • Prototype construction
  • Individual and small scale production

3. Project management

The moment of truth

POMA Systems employs its own modular concept with standardised products in its realisation. Despite this, paint automation remains a puzzle where the devil is in the detail, because applying paint is applied paint chemistry plus technique. Enormous meticulousness is required to adapt a painting facility to the high requirements of quality demanded by both POMA Systems and the customer, from choice of system to assembly, commissioning, maintenance and optimization.

POMA Systems forms a synergetic unit to address the tasks of painting automation: experience in specialist engineering plus specialisation in paint application. In project support we draw on expertise in our competence areas of engineering, electrical engineering, information technology, manufacturing technology and paint application.

4. Development and construction

Technicians and engineers in focus

The planning, development and construction of a paint facility or complex components requires clear specifications. It is not unusual for the necessary product specifications to be created as a result of the extensive communication with the customer or for clarity regarding detail requirements for a project to only be achieved during the work process itself. In addition to the technical aspects of a project our engineers and technicians keep a close eye on the relevant statutory requirements, guidelines and factors, such as economy, environmental and health protection as well as quality assurance. And it is only with the implementation of product quality statements that we, and ultimately the customer, maintain credibility. As a result, continuous communication with our customers in the various phases of the project is of immense importance.

The placing of an order is followed by all successive project stages. These are planning, the co-ordination of development details, mechanical design, E-technology, procurement, manufacturing and assembly and commissioning. It is only after this that we regard a project as completed.

5. Process Engineering

Paint application and control technology

The control technology is the core and logic center of every paint application. The technical center is therefore equipped with a hardware-independent test environment for the development of application controls.

Process engineering - guideline conformity and economy
  • Process optimisation
  • Reducing solvent consumption
  • Reducing paint loss
  • Acceleration of flushing times
  • Acceleration of paint changing times
  • Observance of emissions regulations

6. Realization

Technolocy in hardness test - Product development and customer demonstration

Our customers have access to a modern technical center. In this test environment extensive testing is conducted on systems that are later to be put into operation. In addition, customers can also receive demonstrations of a wide range of practical applications of POMA Systems' products. The technical center offers several teaching boxes for painting robots and test structures. Directly adjacent is a paint laboratory with a variable development and demonstration plant for multi-component technology. Robots from well-known OEMs such as ABB and FANUC serve as test robots.

The test facility is designed for robotic operation (quantity control) and manual applications (pressure regulation). The control technology has been developed by POMA Systems using the SIMATIC S7 and permits the use of 1-K-, 2-K- and 3-K applications. Paint applications are tested here and complete systems configured for our customers.

7. Technical center and training

You never stop learning

This statement applies for every field of work, without limitation. Training is essential for the operation of our complex painting facilities. Because operating our plant expertly and safely requires knowledge beyond the functionality, mechanics and controls. The training is conceived in a target group-specific manner, comprising specific, in-depth expertise in addition to the basics. This includes elemental aspects such as the daily movements required to operate the machines, the user programmes with all menu areas and data structures as well as all necessary safety aspects. In addition, we also deal with numerous detail questions regarding paint application, cleaning and maintenance. Detailed focus may lie, for example, on the main sealing points or valve problems, as well as the extension of lifetime through correct installation and maintenance, in the case of the gear metering pumps.

We offer practically-oriented training for
  • Operating staff
  • Maintenance staff
  • Engineers
  • Technicians

8. Quality management

Developments and construction designs in custom engineering are strictly governed by European Union directives. Our products are subject to numerous standards and norms, such as the Machinery Directive, the Low Voltage Directive and the Directive on Electromagnetic Compatibility. Harmonised standards based on DIN EN and VDE norms define requirements for electrical fittings and machine safety. The safe handling of volatile organic substances as per the VOC Directive also plays an important role in painting automation.  With in-depth analyses and the design of operationally safe machines, POMA Systems goes to great lengths to ensure due compliance.

The meeting point between human and machine calls for an interface design that creates an equal balance of ergonomics and safety. It should provide transparency of machine functions, sensible reduction of data (depending on the user group), an expert mode with complete display of all parameters and machines status details and clear process controls. It should also be environmentally compatible, provide protection from injury and be comfortable and not tiring to use. A well-designed human-machine interface boosts product quality, while the central focus is on protecting man and environment.
