Machine safety is one of control system technology’s main areas of use. The protection of people takes top priority in mechanical engineering. PC-based measuring systems are not permitted by employer’s liability insurers on safety grounds. Unlike control systems, PCs do not adopt a predefined state in the event of a fault. It is thus, for example, the job of the safety PLC in the emergency stop circuit to deprive a machine of all kinetic energy within the shortest time possible.
